Topic 5 - Basic rules, right of way & traffic regulations
In the fifth theory topic of our driving school, we deal with the basic rules of the road, the right of way rules and important traffic regulations. This knowledge is crucial for safe and responsible behavior on the road.

Theory topics
The basic rule of the road
The central basic rule is:
“Every road user must behave in such a way that no one else is harmed, endangered or hindered or inconvenienced more than is unavoidable under the circumstances.”
This rule forms the foundation for respectful and careful interaction on the road. It emphasizes the responsibility of each individual to actively contribute to the safety of all road users.
Right of way - who goes first?
Right of way rules are essential to create clarity at intersections and junctions and to avoid accidents. Important aspects are
- Right-before-left rule: At intersections without traffic signs, traffic coming from the right has right of way.
- Priority roads: Marked by traffic sign 306, vehicles on the priority road have priority.
- Stop sign (traffic sign 206): Here you must come to a complete stop at the stop line and give way.
- “Give way” (sign 205): At this point you must give way to other road users, but you do not necessarily have to stop if there is no cross traffic.
- Traffic circles: Vehicles on traffic circles have right of way. Vehicles must be allowed to enter if appropriate signs indicate this.
Important traffic regulations
In addition to the right of way rules, there are other important traffic regulations:
- Speed limits: Different speed limits apply depending on the area (urban, extra-urban, highway). Traffic signs can also regulate these.
- No overtaking: Marked by appropriate traffic signs. Overtaking is strictly prohibited here.
- Distance regulations: A sufficient safety distance from the vehicle in front is mandatory in order to be able to react in time.
- Behavior at crosswalks: Pedestrians and cyclists must be allowed to cross the road at crosswalks. Special care is required here.
Why are these rules so important?
Compliance with these rules is guaranteed:
- Safety: Reduction of the risk of accidents for you and other road users.
- Smooth traffic flow: Clear rules prevent traffic jams and gridlock.
- Legal certainty: avoid fines, points or even disqualification from driving by complying with the rules.
Tips for everyday life
- Be attentive: Constantly observe traffic signs and situations.
- Drive defensively: Anticipatory driving and consideration for others.
- Regular refresher courses: Stay informed about current traffic regulations, as laws can change.
Conclusion
A thorough understanding of the basic rules, priority regulations and general traffic regulations is essential for every responsible driver. At our driving school, we impart this knowledge in a practical and understandable way so that you can participate in road traffic safely and confidently.
Together we will ensure that you not only pass the test successfully, but that you are also a safe and considerate road user in the long term.
