Class B at a glance
Includes all motor vehicles (except AM, A1, A2 and A) with a maximum permissible mass of 3,500 kg. It is designed for the transportation of a maximum of 8 persons, excluding the driver.
Can I pull a trailer with a class B driver's license?
Motor vehicles (except motorcycles) with up to 8 seats in addition to the driver’s seat. With a trailer up to 750 kg. Also with a heavier trailer, as long as the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg. Class BE driving license is only required once the combination of vehicle and trailer exceeds 3,500 kg. Between 3,500 and 4,250 kg, the B96 extension is enough.

Permitted vehicles when key number B96 is entered
Cars and trailers with a trailer GVW over 750 kg, where the combined weight of vehicle and trailer is more than 3,500 kg but not more than 4,250 kg.
Permitted vehicles when entering the B196 key number
With the B196 key number you may ride A1 motorcycles (up to 125 cc, up to 11 kW) in Germany — without a separate A1 test. Requirement: you have held class B for at least 5 years and are at least 25 years old. B196 is valid in Germany only.
Validity
15 years validity if the driver’s license was issued since 19.01.2013.
Important: However, old driving licenses must be exchanged. This applies to all licenses issued before 19 January 2013.
Examinations
The practical test may also be taken a maximum of 1 month before reaching the minimum age.
Trial period
There is a 2-year probationary period during which misconduct has special consequences!
Good to know: BF17 is not a separate licence — it is accompanied driving with class B from age 17. B96 and B196 are extensions (key numbers) of class B. BE, however, is a separate driving licence class for towing heavy trailers.

It is the most common driving license and entitles you to drive cars up to a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tons. This means that you can drive vehicles such as limousines, estate cars, off-road vehicles and smaller vans. This category allows you to drive independently on the road and is therefore an important step towards individual mobility. To obtain a category B driving license, you must be at least 17 years old and apply to the road traffic office for a driving license. In addition, a medical examination and an eye test are required to confirm your physical and health suitability to drive a motor vehicle. Before the practical test, you must also successfully pass the theory test, in which you must demonstrate your understanding of traffic rules, road signs and safe behavior on the road. Don’t worry! A total of three special drives are required for driving license category B: one freeway drive, one overland drive and one night drive. These special drives serve to familiarize you with different traffic situations and conditions and to improve your driving skills. With a category B driving license, you are allowed to tow trailers as long as the total permissible weight of the trailer and the towing vehicle together does not exceed 3.5 tons. This regulation applies to category B without the key number 96. If you want to tow trailers with a gross vehicle weight of more than 750 kg, you must obtain an additional category BE driving license.
With the B196 rider training course, you can extend your existing category B license and ride motorcycles up to 125cc.
