Topic 10 - Stationary traffic

In the tenth theory topic of our driving school, we deal with stationary traffic. This topic is of great importance as it deals with the rules and behavior when stopping and parking vehicles. Correct behavior in stationary traffic contributes significantly to road safety and order in traffic.

Theory topics

What is stationary traffic?

Stationary traffic refers to vehicles that do not participate in moving traffic. This includes both stopping and parking:

  • Stop: An intentional interruption of the journey for a maximum of three minutes or as long as the traffic situation requires (e.g. at red lights).
  • Parking: Any prolonged interruption of driving that is not required by the traffic situation or an order.

Stopping and parking regulations

General stopping and parking bans:

  • Absolute stopping ban: Indicated by traffic sign 283, where neither stopping nor parking is permitted.
  • Restricted stopping ban: Marked by traffic sign 286, where stopping is permitted for up to three minutes but parking is prohibited.

Special prohibited zones

  • Before and at intersections and junctions: Maintain a distance of at least 5 meters from the intersection of the road edges.
  • At level crossings: Parking is prohibited at least 50 meters in front of and behind the level crossing.
  • At bus stops: Stopping and parking at bus stop signs is not permitted; a distance of 15 meters must be maintained.
  • On crosswalks and cycle lanes: Stopping and parking is prohibited here to ensure the safety of these road users.

Traffic signs and markings

Parking spaces:

  • Parking space sign: Marked by traffic sign 314, parking is permitted here, often with additional signs for certain conditions.
  • Disabled parking spaces: Can only be used with the appropriate parking permit.
  • Resident parking zones: Parking only permitted for residents with a parking permit.

Markings:

  • Yellow lines: Indicate stopping or parking bans.
  • Marked parking areas: Vehicles must be parked within the marked areas.

Correct behavior when parking and stopping

  • Safe parking of the vehicle: Secure the vehicle against rolling away, switch off the engine and engage the steering wheel lock if necessary.
  • Do not obstruct traffic: When stopping and parking, make sure that other road users are not impaired.
  • Sufficient space: Leave enough space for pedestrians, especially baby carriages and wheelchair users, on the sidewalk.
  • Consideration for residents: Keep access roads and driveways clear.

Getting in and out

  • Careful traffic observation: Before opening the doors, check the traffic behind to avoid accidents.
  • Get off on the right: If possible, always get off on the side facing away from traffic.
  • Secure children: Take particular care when getting children in and out of the vehicle and accompany them.

Special situations

  • Emergency and emergency vehicles: Do not park in front of entrances and exits of the fire department, police or rescue services.
  • Loading activities: Special rules apply when loading and unloading, but this should be done quickly and without obstruction.
  • Time-limited parking: In zones where parking disks are compulsory, observe the prescribed maximum parking time.

Consequences of violations

  • Fines: Illegal parking can be subject to fines, which vary depending on the severity of the offense.
  • Towing: In the event of obstruction or danger, the vehicle may be towed away for a fee.
  • Points in Flensburg: Serious offenses can be punished with points in the driving aptitude register.

Tips for everyday life

  • Pay attention to traffic signs: Always check the signs before parking the vehicle.
  • Use parking guidance systems: In cities, these can help you find a legal parking space quickly.
  • Observe environmental zones: In some areas, only vehicles with the appropriate sticker are allowed to park.

Our concern

We would like to convey the importance of correct behavior in stationary traffic. By adhering to the rules, you will contribute to this:

  • Safety: Avoidance of accidents and hazards.
  • Smooth traffic flow: No unnecessary obstructions for other road users.
  • Environmental protection: Avoidance of noise pollution and exhaust fumes caused by unnecessary search traffic.

Conclusion

The topic of “stationary traffic” is an essential part of driver training. It’s not just about finding a parking space, but also about taking responsibility for your own behavior and showing consideration for others.
